A Day in the Life of a Skip Hire Truck Driver

 

My phone starts beeping on the locker beside me, I reach over and turn the alarm off, its 5.30am and time to go to work. BTW I'm Willie and I work as a skip hire truck driver in Dublin Ireland. Kettle's boiled and a quick cuppa tae and Im out the door and into the van, its now 5.45am and I'm due to start my deliveries a 6.30am.

So I drive the 15kms to the yard arriving there at about 6.05am. Into the yard and get to my truck. So every morning without fail, I must check my truck for oil, water, and give it a general check over to make sure everything is working. eg lights and indicators, and the wheels are hard and mirrors are clean. Check for diesel.

Next I check my list of deliveries and collections, okay so today I have 8 deliveries and 9 collections but thats not so bad as most deliveries and collections are all based out in north west of county Dublin, I'v got one collection & 2 deliveries taking me into the city traffic.

I plan my route starting with those city deliveries and get them out of the way early. I load up and take with me 2 empty midi size skips, and 3 standard builders skips and start my deliveries.

First I deliver a midi skip in Dublin 3 I arrived there at around 7am and traffic is already getting hectic, I deliver my first skip without too much trouble and Ive been lucky with the traffic as I head to my second drop 2kms away in Stoneybatter,

First problem someone parked a car where the skip is supposed to go, not to worry the customer is on it straight away and finds the person who owns the car fairly quickly. After about 10 minutes waiting I leave my second delivery and make my way towards my third drop.

I travel towards north west Dublin, I have 3 deliveries for Blanchardstown which I complete in the next hour and make the first 2 of my collections also in the Blanchardstown area and take them to the recycling depot. when these are emptied, I am able to deliver those two skips again to new customers this area.

So now I only have one delivery left but I have to return to the base to get a large skip. So on my way back to base I do two more collections and bring them to the recycle-rs before going back to base to collect a 14 yard skip for delivery back to north west Dublin.

Its now almost lunch time and Ive have made good progress on my route today. When I arrive in the yard the manager asks me to do a quick local deliver before going back to north west Dublin. No problem, I do the local job and then do my large skip delivery.

With all my deliveries completed I have 5 collections to do 3 are here in the north west and I use a nearby recycling center, then I finally head back in towards the city where I have a collection and luckily I also have one on route. After collecting my last skips it is now 4.15pm and I make my way towards base to finish for the day. Its been a long day and ive been up and about for almost 12 hours now.
